World AIDS day
- The AIDS epidemic broke out in the very early 20th Century in DR Congo, and today more than 36 million people in the world are affected by AIDS. In 2016, 6,003 in France people found out they were HIV positive. 44% of these people are gay or bisexual men.

The death of Robert Dhéry
- Robert Dhéry (1921-2004) was a French actor, film director and playwright. With his wife, Colette Brosset, he founded the troop, the “Branquignols” which included future stars, such as Louis de Funès, Jean Carmet, Jacqueline Maillan and Michel Serrault.

The "Erika" shipwreck
- The "Erika", a oil tanker chartered by Total, the French oil company, floundered off the coast of Brittany on 12 Dec 1999. It was transporting 30,884 tonnes of heavy fuel, of which 18,000 leaked into the sea. It polluted over 400 km of coastline from Finistère to Charente Maritime.

The 35-hour week bill is passed by the French parliament
- The reform of the 35-hour week was implemented by the government under Lionel Jospin, in 2000. This law set the legal limit at 35 hours per week for all employees.

Discovery of the Chauvet cave
- Jean-Marie Chauvet, Éliette Brunel and Christian Hillaire stumble upon a prehistoric cave in the Estre cirque in Ardèche (South of France) on 18th Dec 1994. The cave is decorated with wall paintings and strewn with animal bones.

The Algerian Islamic Group hijacks the Paris-Algiers flight
- Four members of the Algerian Islamic Group (GIA) hijack an Air France A-300 Airbus at Algiers airport. Three passengers will finally be executed by the commando. On 26th Dec 1994, the plane takes off for Marseille-Marignane airport where the terrorists will be shot by the French anti-terrorist squad (GIGN).
